Five plugins for audience development

When I’m visiting new websites, the most annoying experience I’ve come across involves broken links. If I’m excited to learn new information, and the link I’ve been promised doesn’t work, I leave the site immediately. For website operators, broken links not only scare away potential audience members, they also have a negative impact on your site authority. Redirection, for WordPress, allows you to manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This plugin is particularly useful if you’re migrating pages from an old website, or changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

The Google Custom Search plugin allows searching of your website based on Google’s index. This helps users easily find particular content they are interested in.

Efficient Related Posts determines related posts based on related tags. It helps users engage with specific topics more deeply.

The PJW Page Excerpt is valuable for pages that rank well in search engines. Since pages don’t have an excerpt field by default, this plugin enables pages to have an excerpt available. Internet users are much more likely to click on search results with an excerpt over those that do not.

Finally, there’s the Visitor Maps and Who’s Online plugin, which allows audience development professionals to view visitor details, including the page the user is on, time online, and location of the user.

There are many WordPress plugins valuable for audience development that we’ll discuss in the coming months. What are some plugins you use to strengthen your audience development efforts?
